Avauntular - A Great Aunt - AKA Materteral

Many Great Aunts on the Photo Above

I am starting to take seriously my impending Great Aunt-Hood.

I have long been one of those ordinary, mundane aunts, but now I will be achieving GREAT aunt hood.

The Mad-Eriks and their Maverik child are the cause.

It occurs to me that, while uncles have a big word for their uncle-like behavior, (avuncular), we aunts do not have a similarly multi-syllabic lofty word for our aunt-like behavior.

Therefore, I am provosing " avauntular". Now, my dictionary says "avaunt" means "hence". Do you think this will cause confusion among those that know the true meaning of avaunt, whomever they may be?

Alternately, we could go for "auntular". i think "aunt-ish' "auntly" and "auntish" may be preferred by some, but why use "use" when you can utilize "utilize"?? Let's speak lofty.

Your vote matters!

  • The Oxford English Dictionary has materteral and materterine, both derived from the Latin mātertera ("maternal aunt"), and described as "humorously pedantic"; for "characteristic of an aunt". There are two quotations : With maternal and materteral anxiety (1823) and A kindly materterine message (1874).

Don’t you hate it when you have invented a clever new word and you find out that some ancient Latin guy already invented it?  And don’t you hate the arrogant people who search on the internet and point this out to you?

But your new word is cool so I would use it.

Definition of avuncular

: suggestive of an uncle especially in kindliness or geniality

__________

A female version of “avuncular”

  • August 27, 2006

Q: A caller asked you on the air if there’s a feminine equivalent to “avuncular.” The Oxford English Dictionary lists “materteral” as meaning “characteristic of an aunt.” It comes from the Latin “matertera,” which refers to a mother’s sister. That’s consistent with “avuncular,” which means “characteristic of an uncle.” It comes from “avunculus,” which refers to a mother’s brother.

A: You’re right. But the OED lists only a single published reference to the word, from 1823, and calls it “humorously pedantic.” Until it shows up in more dictionaries, not many people are likely to use it. It’s not completely useless, however, as long as we can use it to answer the question, “What’s a word meaning ‘aunt-like’?”

By the way, one listener suggested creating the word “aunticular” and another listener suggested “tantatious” as feminine versions of “avuncular.”
